TLC Native Bees Project
Two years ago, The Lakes College adopted a hive of
about 2000 Native Stingless Bees with the aim of
keeping them happy and healthy in the TLC garden.
Bees are super important for the environment, so
Year 4 Science students have been learning all about the role
bees have in the hive as well as their importance and impact
in the garden. Students are able to learn first hand when by
observing the hive and watching the bees leave and return to
the hive with pollen. Students have learnt that if bees fall out of
the chain and don’t do their job, then 70% of the world’s food
crops would fail.
Year 5 student Ben T, is keenly interested in the progress and
welfare of the TLC bees and even assisted David the Bee Man,
when he recently harvested the honey and split the hive. Ben
watched as David talked and explained about bee eggs and
pointed out the juvenile bees, still too young to fly. Ben even had
a taste of the sweet bush bee honey that has taken two years for
the bees to produce.
