Progress meets with Council on Chelmsford Road “Dark Alley”

In the dusk hours (5.30 – 6.00pm) of 10th August, Progress
Association Management Committee Members met with a
Council Road Planner to point out the very serious safety concerns
for both pedestrians and drivers on the section of Chelmsford Rd
       between Muriel and Winifred Streets.

Whilst the opening up of Chelmsford Road from Kinsellas Rd
West has been welcomed by the vast majority of residents in
providing an easier route from the western side of the Village,
it has also highlighted the need to improve the “old section” of
this road which is sandwiched between the two upgraded ends.
       Interim recommendations included:

       1. Install lighting near Ruby Street corner
       2. Increase the bitumen width of the road
       3. Speed sign reduction over that section
       4. Footpath access for pedestrians

The need for these interim solutions was aptly highlighted
during our on-site discussion by several very discourteous
drivers who travelled at speed close to pedestrians in conditions
that warranted “travelling to the conditions.” Pedestrians should
also consider wearing lighter coloured clothing at these times.

The Progress Association is confident that Council will take
appropriate interim action, but will continue to follow up those
discussions with Councillor Jodie Shipway and council officers.
